Hyundai i10 embraces new 1.2-litre engine in September 2008
Published: 16 June 2008
Hyundai i10 provides 1.2-litre more reasons why UK car buyers should make the nippy city car their next fuel, road tax and environment-saving investment this year.
On Hyundai shelves from September 2008, the 1.2-litre will materialise in the Comfort and Style-trimmed models, with a starting price of £7,345 for the entry-level Comfort, adding an extra £1,000 for the automatic version.
The new 1.2-litre four-cylinder ‘Kappa’ petrol engine is the perfect foil for the existing 1.1-litre, which, whilst no white elephant itself, certainly isn’t the gazelle that the 1.2-litre seems when compared.
Indeed, power is upped by 18% (now 76bhp), and torque gets a 20% (now 87lb-ft) fillip – neither at the expense of returning East Anglia to the sea, as emissions remain constant with the 1.1-litre unit at 119g/km.
Top speed now nudges 102mph, 8mph faster than the 1.1-litre, with the 62mph dash being cut by nigh-on three seconds and now achieved in 12.8 seconds, standing as testament to a dramatic improvement in performance.
Hyundai has also spent time on the versatility of the in-gear changes, adding fluidity to the executions which makes for more relaxed journeying.
And drivers wont need deeper pockets sewn into their slack either, as they’ll notice not a jot of difference at the pumps, level-pegging with the smaller-engined alternative and nurturing 56.5mpg on the average cycle.
The introduction of the new i10 means that all those with a manual transmission screwed down will only have to find a miserly £35 every 12 months too, as it settles in and makes itself and you comfortable in VED Band D.
Hyundai i10 buyers never saw ESP coming either, until the car manufacturer said it can now be ticked on the 1.2-litre i10 option box at your dealer and handed over in exchange for £350. Which can only help the i10 aim even higher than the Euro NCAP four-star it received recently for all models.
Air-con and Hyundai’s confidence-cementing five year warranty are also present and correct in the new 1.2-litre i10 range.
Seizing the moment, Hyundai is kitting out is range-topping i10 Style model with a leather-trimmed steering wheel, gear lever skirt and handbrake to afford its interior a more Waitrose ambience for PoundSaver money. £7,995 to put a figure on it.
