Fiat Phylla Concept will bring sunshine into the lives of city car buyers

Fiat has announced details of an all-new solar energy, hydrogen fuel-cell-powered city car concept named the Phylla.

The Fiat Phylla concept is purely an experimental urban vehicle that concentrates its efforts on electric propulsion and photovoltaic panels, attempting to achieve its key goal of affording its potential owner a ten-fold reduction per kilometre covered when compared to the equivalent, petrol-powered car.

The Fiat Phylla - Greek for 'leaf' - features roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels that also supplement the city car's hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain, effectively allowing it to travel up to 11 miles a day on the electrical energy captured.

The cabin is characterised by asymmetrical pillars which contour the triangular glass surfaces that can be essentially replaced by the solar panels, whilst the only actual 'mechanical' factor that remains is the steering wheel assembly.

This formation – complete with individual motors located at each wheel - would allow for a myriad of differing body styles to be adapted to the platform.

Aside from auguring well for driver visibility, the Phylla is 100% recyclable, given that its properties comprise solely of aluminium, bio-degradable plastics and a plethora of other green materials that return to compost. What's more, the Fiat Phylla emits nothing more sinister or earth-eroding than H20 and positive vibes.

Measuring 2995mm long, the Phylla's layout comprises of a 2+2 seating configuration and boasts a 584-litre luggage capacity once the rear seats are parallel to the floor. Weighing in at 750kg, plus 150kg for its battery pack in electric/fuel cell stance, the unique city car is capable of nigh-on 81mph at full tilt.

Virtues of the the technology may well find its way into Fiat's micro city car – the new 'Topolino' which is due to go into production in 2010.
