Hot hatch: What a burning BMW 3-Series looks like
Published: 30 June 2008
The art of self-combustion is obviously a step too far for one German driver who took it upon himself to torch his own BMW 3-Series as a one man/car protest at the steeply rising cost of fuel across Europe.
Harming no one but his car, the 30-year old driver was so incensed with the current situation engulfing drivers, he drove his 3-Series into the grounds of Frankfurt’s Convention Centre, jumped out, lavished a can of petrol over it and proceeded to start his own BMW-shaped bonfire as a statement of his abject disapproval.
There wasn’t much to do by the time fire crews arrived at the scene, with the exception of heating up a few cocktail sausages, as the car was more or less a pile of embers.
Said to be unemployed, the 30-year-old man will now have limited his employment opportunities further, and will have to look to public transport timetables henceforth.
Mental health issues aside, the unnamed man hasn’t been charged as yet, and insisted he finally – and theatrically- acted out his pyromaniacal fantasies on the realisation that he could no longer afford to drive his car as a direct result of exorbitant petrol taxation.
Authorities were looking into whether the man could be charged with flouting Germany’s environmental laws with his publicity stunt/cry for help. If convicted, penalties range from fines to a maximum five years behind bars.
