Audi A5 gets all-new 2.0-litre TFSI engine

Audi A5 lays its hands on all-new 2.0-litre TFSI lump. Ssshh

Audi’s current 3.0-litre V6 power source will make way for the more frugally-attentive new 2.0-litre turbocharged TFSI engine.

With 208bhp on tap, the A5s introduction to the TFSI lump is based on the German car manufacturer's 1.8-litre power plant, the notable difference being that both economy and added oomph is awarded courtesy of the new ‘valve lift’ technology found within.

Improved oomph is accompanied by some pretty brutal grunt in the new 2.0-litre block, 258 lb-ft of torque to be exact, from the moment the rev needle aligns itself to the 1,500rpm mark. Which, like-for-like, exceeds the comparative output relinquished by the 3.2-litre V6 engine.

All this is enabled by way of some new sliding camshafts that encourage the A5's ECU to snatch a higher cam profile when the driver’s right foot is hard down on the fast pedal, essentially bypassing the usual lower-rev pecking order as speed builds.

Bosses at Ingolstadt put their reputations on the line by claiming that the new Audi A5 2.0-litre TFSI will therefore hit 62mph within 6.9 seconds – 0.7 seconds more pedestrian than the 3.2-litre V6 – yet its only environmentally-shortening legacy is 145g/km of CO2 emissions.

And for ardent petrol pump-spotters out there, buy a new A5 2.0-litre TFSI starting from £28,760 for the front wheel drive model, and you won’t get that many hits in your pocketbook thanks to an average cycle of 42.8mpg.

Of course, opt for the £30,285 Quattro with all-wheel-drive and you’ll fill up that particular book a lot quicker.
