Alfa Romeo Mi.To GTA in the offing?

Avoiding the foolish Photoshop route, here's a Mi.To GTA alloy

Rumours are rife that an Alfa Romeo Mi.To GTA could shore up the imminently arriving Mi.To supermini range as early as next summer.

Frenzied speculations suggest a 230bhp 1.8-litre turbo unit will make the existing 175bhp Mini Cooper S seem like a pedal car in comparison.

A direct-injection 1.8-litre petrol engine would of course satisfy most tastes. Ignoring the label marked ‘responsible’ Alfa instead settled on the label marked ‘Arrgggh’, and turbo-charged the lump for good measure. That measure is roughly 230bhp, which means the Mi.To GTA will be lauded as ‘fastest in supermini class 2009’ with immediate effect.

Three driver modes will likely be available - Dynamic is geared for sporty driving, Normal for city shuttling and All-weather for when climatical conditions dictate lower rev settings.

The general consensus of opinion is that the Mi.To GTA will plunder a six-speed manual gearbox, although hand-to-mouth-covered whispers suggest a robotized six-speed twin-clutch approximation along the lines of VW Group’s DSG assemblage.

Until this announcement, the £14,775 155bhp Mi.To 1.4TB Veloce was collared as the ring leader, assuming front-running status over the handful of other 1.4-litre petrol engines that will make themselves known on launch, as well as a brace of oil burners kicking off with the £12,175 90bhp, 1.3-litre JTDm.

All Mi.To’s grab air-con, LED rear lights, seven airbags, whilst Lusso models bag carbonfibre-effect dash, 16” rims and remote audio controls attached to the steering wheel. Veloce brings additional Fiat family Blue&Me media connectivity, white dials, rear spoiler, red brake calipers and 17” alloys to the Mi.To’s already plentiful table.

In normal flavourings, the all-new Alfa Romeo Mi.To will be offloaded in UK showrooms with three trim levels – Turismo, Lusso and Veloce - as early as January 2009.

Not since the slightly less full-throttle Austin Metro 1.4-litre GTA circa 1992, has the GTA badge been so aptly applied to a 1400 engine. We salute you Alfa.
