9ff GT9 - the latest fastest car in the world
Published: 16 May 2008
Not a month goes by these days without someone claiming to have unearthed another Veyron-killer. A few months ago it was the SSC Ultimate Aero, on St George's Day is was the Keating TKR, now it's the 9ff GT9 - based on the Porsche GT3.
The GT9 clocked 254mph at the Papenburg Oval in Germany in April - a shade off the 256mph recorded by the Ultimate Aero, but good enough to trump the Veyron.
Powered by a volcano and weighing less than a kitten, the GT9 harbours a mid-mounted 4.0-litre twin-turbo flat six kicking out close to 1000 horses and over 700 imperial torques.
Mated to the engine are a limited-slip differential and a six-speed manual transmission with a sequential transmission optionally available. And then there's the small matter of the gold air intake.
It will supposedly race to 186.41mph in just 17.6sec - 0.6 seconds quicker than the Bugatti and tops out at a claimed 254.77mph.
There's 20 available at £350,000 each, making it a lot more exclusive and a good bit cheaper than the Veyron or Lambo Reventon.
