New Subaru boxer diesel engine hoodwinks UK buyers
Published: 09 May 2008
An innovative Subaru dealer is giving its customer a better look at Subaru's new boxer diesel engine by making the bonnet on a Subaru Outback apparently transparent, exposing the Scooby's inner workings.
However, a closer inspection reveals that the Outback's bonnet has had a state-of-the-art vinyl wrap applied, which intricately details the exact layout of Subaru's light-weight boxer engine.
Again, in profile, the Outback tricks the eye into thinking its doors are seemingly transparent, yet in reality bear the same high-definition visual sticker. Nonetheless, it gives prospective Subaru buyers a unique insight into the manufacturer's symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, as well as the exhaust silencer toward the vehicle's rear flanks.
Having been inspired by a cut-away image of the new diesel Boxer engine in the Subaru brochure, the dealer imaged up the Outback in one day, after a photograph was taken of the engine using a high-resolution eight mega-pixel camera.
Of course, Subaru UK isn't averse to clever PR stunts itself, most recently capturing the public's imagination by having a car transporter kitted out with three new Imprezas to the underside of the lower deck, so as to emphasize the cars 'Subaglue' propensity.
The new Subaru boxer diesel engine can be found (resolutely behind the bonnet) in both the Outback and Legacy range, and is priced from £20,995 in the entry level Legacy 2.0 D Sports Tourer guise.
