The new Audi A4 has received a maximum five-star NCAP rating for adult protection in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests.
The A4 saloon was awarded four stars from five for child safety, but received a disappointing two stars from four for pedestrian protection.
NCAP judged that there was negligible distortion of the passenger compartment in the frontal test and both the driver and passenger were well protected, while the A4 scored maximum points in the side impact and pole tests.
The A4 scored maximum points for its protection of the 1½ year old infant and the three-year-old child based on dummy responses in the full scale tests, but missed out on full marks for a lack of properly-marked safety information relating to airbags and ISOFIX restraints
The bumper scored maximum points for its protection of pedestrians' legs but the front edge of the bonnet scored none and the bonnet was rated as predominantly poor for the protection it offered to the head of a struck adult.
European car safety tester NCAP has bemoaned the lack of progress made by manufacturers on protecting pedestrians, despite forthcoming legislation.

The new Audi A4 Avant has more passenger and load space and a wide choice of engines, but practicality and the cost of options count against the premium estate.

Audi releases new A4 Avant details and pictures - claiming the new estate model has the largest boot in its class. Petrol and diesel engines are available, quattro four-wheel drive is an option and UK deliveries start from June from around £22K.
