DJ Chris Evans has shelled over over £5.5m on a 1961 250 GT SWB California Spyder, once owned by Hollywood actor James Coburn.
The auction took place over the weekend at RM Auctions' second annual "Ferrari Leggenda e Passione" event in Italy.
Having paid over twice the £2m (€3.4m) estimate, Evans said: "I didn't expect it to go for that price, but I'm fine, absolutely calm. I've just had a Guinness."
The car, an evolution of the 250 GT Tour de France, has a total displacement of 2953cc, punches out 280bhp and features three carburettors. It was styled by Pininfarina, who also designed the latest addition to the Ferrari range, which was revealed online just a few days ago and has been named the California in honour of this special car.
Other stars of the auction included the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM which fetched in excess of 4.5 million euro and one of the 612 Scagliettis, fresh from the Magic India Discovery tour just a few weeks ago, which sold for €220,000.
