BMW X6 smoothes out traditional SUV edges
Published: 04 April 2008
The all-new BMW X6 enters the increasingly-baffling SUV/SAC/4X4 equation from the end of next month, costing UK buyers £42,750 in its elementary form.
Having crossed over to the darker side of the bulbous SUV legion, BMW thrust the four-seating X6 toward the army of Audi Q7, Lexus RX 400, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport buyers as an alternative alternative.
With Infiniti's EX37 Coupe crossover
amongst us and Land Rover's proposed LRX crossover SUV hinted at, BMW
are describing the X6 as the 'worlds first Sports Activity Coupe'.
Although SsangYong may argue the toss given the recent invention of
its Actyon Sport.
So the German manufacturer has given us yet another
acronym to add to the list of niche for the sake of niches – SAC.
To the person on the street this
translates as the X6 being somewhere between a coupe and a 4X4, to
the keener of eye, bigger (and somewhat uglier) than an X3, yet standing in
the shadow of the X5.
However, Munich's best story-tellers claim it's a
more involving drive, and also add rhyme to the reasoning of its
voluminous but highly-sprung boot space being anti-canine by
suggesting it's designed for the scale of 'unusual sports equipment'. Of course.
Engines are four-fold and divided
equally betwixt oil and fossil fuel burners. The most junior power
plant being the 232bhp six-cylinder 3.0-litre single-turbo diesel,
the most senior the 402bhp twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol driven.
A 282bhp six-cylinder twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel and a 302bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol make up the rank and file.
Six-speed autoboxes with sports mode are prevalent in all models and paddle-shifts located on the steering wheel are representative of the times. Four-wheel drive is standard, whilst extracurricular appointments include adaptive suspension and nifty driving condition reactive headlight beam patterns.
Depending on which angle you approach
it from, the BMW X6 is both a coupe and an off-roader. Something for
everyone.
Apart from environmental lobbyists thanks to its CO2 emissions fluctuating model-wise between 220 and 299 g/km irrespective of EfficientDynamics in place. Both petrol models will magnetize £950's worth of so-called 'showroom tax' to the X6, whilst owners will have nowhere to hide from the forthcoming £25 London Congestion Charge.
