Many more hippy campers signposted in future
Published: 09 April 2008
Not content with reinventing the VW Beetle, Jetta and the Scirocco, past masters Volkswagen are now set to cause a camper van renaissance with its Caddy Maxi Tramper.
Not quite the iconic, universally loved VW Camper Microbus seen across the fields of southern England since the dawn of rock festivals, and on Cornish beaches clad in its surfboard and wet suit Kombi combo though.
More the passenger transport-of-choice for budding athletes, occasional camp fans and independent travelers according to Vee-Dub.
Nonetheless, startled by a few flashbulbs at the Leipzig Motor Show in Germany this week, the Caddy Maxi Tramper has been launched on the back of VW's 'Springtime for Volkswagen' campaign that's currently in full swing and, essentially, remains more camp than Dale Winton.
Taking its engine and dynamic cues from the Caddy Maxi Life, the Tramper van has a removable six and a half feet long bed and curtains, two different tent attachments that can be hastily-assembled, (anyone recall the folding trailer tent?) an electric tilting/sliding sunroof, a seven-litre cooling box, a battery saver for nocturnal pursuits and a camping furniture set.
Oh, and a magnetic curtain for the rear door window is also standard fit and wards off potential voyeurs.
The 'touring' version of the Caddy Maxi small passenger van also incorporates curtains that zip into mattress' from the roof, storage pockets aplenty and ventilation grilles with inbuilt insect protection that continue to supply fresh air whilst peace lovers try and get some R+R.
The Caddy Maxi Tramper has a choice of three Caddy Maxi Life engines – a 1.6-litre petrol, a 1.9-litre TDI and a 2.0-litre TDI with diesel particulate filter.
Alas, happy, and indeed, hippy campers, won't find kaftan's and joss-sticks included.
