Nissan Navara returns improved NCAP safety results
Published: 14 March 2008
Nissan has received improved NCAP scores for its Navara model, after the pick-up was initially slammed for its unsafe design.
The Navara pick-up fell distinctly short in its recent Euro NCAP safety testing procedures, drawing criticism for the length of time its airbags took to deploy, but has subsequently garnered three Euro NCAP stars from a maximum five for adult occupant protection
The software controlling airbag functionality in Navaras constructed between May and December 2007 was deemed to have been brought in line with design specifications on its latter reappraisal.
Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP said 'Nissan have acted responsibly and promptly in response to our findings. Euro NCAP hopes that by releasing this new result, it will speed up the Service Campaign and ensure that all Navaras are upgraded to the higher safety specification.'
In the side impact test the Navara received maximum points, while the pick-up received four star from a maximum five for Child Occupant Protection.
Unfortunately it's still not great news for child pedestrians should they encounter the Navara bonnet space anytime soon.
Whereas the surface most likely to acquaint itself with an adult pedestrians head offered a fair amount of protection, the same couldn't be said for a minor's head making the same contact – the leading edge of the Navara's bonnet and bumper remaining predominantly suspect in overview.
