Saab 9-X Biohybrid - ethanol-powered with hybrid elements
Published: 04 March 2008
The Saab 9-X Biohybrid concept will be on display at the Geneva Show - the world debut of Saab's vision of a future small car.
Powered by a 1.4-litre 200bhp BioPower turbo engine with hybrid system, the 9-X BioPower returns 57.6 mpg and 117 g CO2/km when running on petrol or at just 105 g/km, with estimated fuel consumption of 44.1 mpg when running on E85 ethanol.
Regenerative braking stores energy that would be otherwise lost by storing it in lithium-ion batteries.
Hinting at a sub 9-3 hatchback model to come, the 9-X is a three-door, four-seat small family car and is near to being production-ready. With a 9-1 model an inevitability, the 9-X may be in production before long.
There are a number of traditional Saab styling cues, such as the grille and steep roofline, but don't expect to see a floating instrument panel or retractable spoiler on a 9-1.
Wireless connectivity to stream audio, visual and satnav data is a possibility on a production model.
