Hyundai Genesis Coupe - could be on its way to the UK

With the New York Motor Show getting under way later this week, what better time to leak photos of the all new Hyundai Genesis Coupe that UK buyers could get their driving mitts on for around £25k.

Developed for the the Korean and US markets – where occupant/pedestrian/soft toy safety isn't, clearly, as high up the agenda – the first thing you notice about the Genesis Coupe is its similarities with the 2+2 Hyundai roadster we've been familiar with in the UK for a while now.

Evolution has been kind to its already sleek, rakish lines, adding a touch of masculinity around its rear haunches, and softening the full frontal impact.

Although any blow being cushioned by unfortunate pedestrians doesn't quite hit the mark according to keen auto industry sources, who hint that any chance of this, the car that will assume the mantle of Hyundai's halo model on launch, making it to our shores hangs in the balance due to what's considered to be sub EU standard safety features.

The Genesis first came to public attention at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, holding court as the Genesis Coupe Concept.

Due to appear on American forecourts early next year, the Hyundai could still however line up at the lights against a Nissan 350Z in the UK in right-hand drive in the foreseeable, regardless of the manufacturers seeming stubbornness to comply to stringent EU regulations.

The ones that persuade car-makers that measures need to be taken so that pedestrians survival chances are improved in the event of a collision, and that innovations such as pop-up bonnets should be embraced.

After all, right-hand drive markets are stepping on each others toes to be allowed to put the Coupe in their shop windows, (in a none ram-raiding style) so ways of getting around these legislations wouldn't fall on deaf ears or blind eyes.

Of course, under Single Vehicle Approval – a limited number of a manufacturers model - (500 in most cases) can side-step the border guards and gain entry into countries such as the UK without the necessary paperwork required to meet full approval. Nevermind.

Engine options will inlcude a 3.0-litre V6 with 310bhp that develops 263lb-ft of torque, (with 150mph in loud mode and 0 – 62mph momentarily noticed at around the 5.4 second mark) and the 2.0-litre, four-pot turbocharged with 210bhp that dishes out 217lb-ft of back-chat.

A 375bhp, 4.6-litre V8 lifted out of the Genesis saloon has been mooted but remains to be confirmed.

All cars will offer the driving experience through a six-speed manual, with those lazy of left foot being able to opt for the five-speed auto on the 2.0 litre turbo and a six-speed on the V6.
