The VW Golf GTI wrote the hot-hatch rulebook in 1977, only for the Peugeot 205 GTI to re-pen some of the crucial chapters in 1987. Some 20 years later, and the Honda Civic Type R has made it encyclopaedic.
The third-generation Type R has far outsold its competition over the past 12 months - no mean feat when you consider that rivals include the Ford Focus ST, Vauxhall Astra VXR and the classic Golf GTI.
Honda's latest interpretation of its refined Civic Type R – launched in March 2007 - is the country's performance hatchback of choice, according to the sales figures.
Compared to the Focus ST (4,778) and Golf GTI (1,984), the Civic Type R has sold 5,192 performance three-door C-segment models.
The GT holds out for 52% return on its initial subscription in light of three years/60,000 miles customer service too.

Except both the Golf and ST are available in 5 door versions as well. Obviously the GTI won´t have sold enough 5dr´s to make up the numbers as its sales of 3dr appear very low anyway (probably because it is vastly overpriced for what it is; a dull hot-hatch - who wants one of them?), but there will certainly have been more than 400-odd 5dr STs been sold.
