AMG-spec Mercedes SL 63 and 65 - very powerful, very expensive

Mercedes has announced details for the new SL AMG 63 and SL AMG 65.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG will be powered by an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 525bhp and 465lb-ft through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT Multi-Clutch Technology 7-speed sports transmission.

The new SL 65 AMG will also be launched alongside the SL 63 AMG, with a 612bhp AMG 6.0-litre biturbo engine developing a huge 738lb-ft of torque.

The SL AMG models feature a vario-roof, which opens in 16 seconds and is also available in an optional glass version.

Fitted with four drive modes: In “C” mode the gearshifts are comfortable and power transfers smooth; In “S” mode the engine and transmission interact with more "bite", with 20% faster shifting; “S+” mode cuts another 20 per cent off shift times, while “M” mode provides gearshifts in just 100 milliseconds.

A Race Start function allows drivers to accelerate from a standstill with maximum traction and acceleration.

The SL 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds before quickly going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.

The SL 65 AMG accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission with three drive modes and limited-slip diff.

The 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels are combined with 255/35 and 285/30 front and rear tyres and internally ventilated, perforated 330 x 26-mm brake discs with four-piston fixed callipers.

Standard kit includes fine nappa leather upholstery, genuine carbon-fibre trim and the multi-way electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with multicontour and memory functions and seat heating. AIRSCARF neck-level heating is an option

Pricing and final specification for UK cars will be announced nearer the April 2008 launch, but don´t expect any change from £100K for the 63 AMG.
