Cadillac STS - a big American car
Published: 28 February 2008
The range-topping 2008 Cadillac STS is available to buy right now with prices starting from £33,995
The £33,995 Cadillac STS luxury sports saloon sits atop the manufacturer's current CTS and CTS V-series high-performance saloon range as it seeks to break into the UK's luxury/high performance saloon market.
Two engines make the indecisive STS buyer's life that much easier for their nearest and dearest. A 3.6-litre V6 power plant that doles out an urgent 311 gee-gees propels occupants of the base model STS toward their destination in 6.9 seconds and goes on to 149mph.
275lb/ft of torque is available 1,600 and 5,800rpm, with the Electronic Driver Throttle (EDT) routinely keeping things together.
Count out another six grand into a Cadillac dealer's hand, and they pass you the keys to £39,999 worth of 4.6-litre Northstar V8 attached to the STS chassis. In fact, any real differences are hard to put a finger on.
326bhp isn't exactly a gargantuan improvement over the V6, the 0 – 62mph traffic light dash is slightly better at 6.2 seconds and the electronic limiter on the STS keeps things below 155mph.
There's considerably more torque (314 lb/ft) to be had out of this lump though, and it does its thing at much lower revs - 4,400rpm, with Variable Valve Timing adding torque and economy.
Elsewhere adjustable dampers are kept in check, the Ride Control system is magnetized and ABS, EBA and ESP catapults STS driver levels beyond proficient.
Sport Luxury is the solitary trim level, and Cadillac feel so confident that buyers won't want for anything other than that found as standard in the STS, they only offer the two options. Although oddly metallic paint (£650) and powered glass sunroof (£1050) are standard features on most vehicles other than rickshaws these days.
Premium quality materials are adapted for most fixtures and fittings, including some top-end wood sourced from Africa on the steering wheel, instrument panel, door trims and centre console.
Three choices of colour bring the leather to life, a comprehensive seat memory package renders your chiropractor redundant and Cadillac's 'EasyKey' keyless entry system means you don't have to exert yourself anywhere.
The usual ensemble of DVD, sat-nav, Voice-recognition, bespoke CD, Bluetooth and binary-finery stack up inside. A reinforced bodyshell structure and masses of airbags tick the appropriate occupant safety boxes.
