Land Rover LRX hybrid concept - coming soon?
Published: 19 February 2008
Land Rover will debut the LRX cross-coupé concept at the Geneva Show in March.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, Land Rover will also display the Land Rover Defender SVX - a highly-specced version of the evergreen Defender, which goes on sale this Spring.
The Land Rover LRX concept The LRX diesel hybrid concept is a compact, lighter weight and sustainability-focused three-door model, offering the potential of 120g/km CO2 emissions and equivalent fuel economy of 60mpg on a European combined drive cycle.
Shorter and lower than the Freelander 2, the LRX is presented as a premium cross-coupé, designed to appeal to new customers in the luxury and executive sector.
Recognisable Land Rover design cues include clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and ´wheel-at-each-corner´ stance.
LRX is conceived as a highly fuel-efficient 2.0-litre turbodiesel hybrid, a powertrain that could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 30% compared with other 4x4s of comparable size, says Land Rover.
It incorporates an Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) which would allow the LRX to use electric drive alone at lower speeds while retaining 4x4 ability in tough conditions.
"The LRX diesel hybrid signals our ability to deliver Land Rover´s core values in a more compact and fuel efficient package.
"For now, LRX remains a concept, designed to gauge public reaction, but the enthusiasm generated since we first unveiled it in January makes me even more certain that this would be a hugely exciting direction for us to take," says Phil Popham, Land Rover´s managing director.
The 60th anniversary Defender SVX is designed to be the most stylish and feature-packed versions that Land Rover has ever produced.
With metallic black paintwork, the Defender SVX will be available in the UK in 90 soft-top and station wagon versions.
New exterior features include a restyled grille surround, tubular side-steps, alloy wheels, reinforced aluminium front undershield, clear-lens headlamps and LED reverse/rear fog lights.
The soft-top model sports a metallic silver tubular cage that supports a tailor-made, removable black fabric hood.
The SVX is equipped with custom-designed Recaro front seats, distinctive alloy gear knobs, a new audio system (with subwoofer and USB socket), iPod compatability and Garmin satellite navigation.
Up to 300 SVX vehicles will be available in the UK, with prices starting from £30,495.
