BMW Vision EfficientDynamics - future technology, today
Published: 22 February 2008
BMW will debut the Vision EfficientDynamics vehicle at the geneva Show - a concept that showcases BMW's low-emissions fuel-efficiency technology.
The Vision EfficientDynamics features hybrid technology, a twin-turbo diesel engine, eight-speed auto gearbox and solar panels, and is housed within a BMW X5.
The Vision EfficientDynamics returns 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and emits 172g/km of carbon dioxide, while the BMW's oil-burning engine delivers over 200 horsepower and nearly 300lb-ft of torque at around 2,000rpm, while sprinting to 62mph in under nine seconds. BMW claims efficiency and emissions are the best of any large SUV on sale.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine uses common-rail injection technology in combination with a mild hybrid adding another 20bhp and 155lb-ft of torque when accelerating. Brake Energy Regeneration is also used to recover energy that would previously have been lost when the engine is on overrun.
Lithium-ion batteries in the boot area of the Vision EfficientDynamics store Brake Energy Regeneration energy and can power the air conditioning, electric coolant pump and the electric power steering system.
The power harnessed by the batteries is also supplemented by roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels, which can be used to pre-heat the diesel fuel, shortening the less efficient warm-up phase.
A new eight- speed automatic transmission delivers fast and efficient gear changes, with the autobox selecting the right ratio for the prevailing driving conditions, thus improving fuel consumption and minimising emissions.
The chassis and ride-height of the X5 have been adapted for the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, adding aerodynamically-efficient 19-inch light alloy wheels with reduced ventilation to reduce wind resistance to the extent that, at 100mph, the car has to produce one horsepower less than a conventionally-wheeled car.
The Vision EfficientDynamics will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show.
Expect to see these technologies introduced to production models soon.
