Tata and Chrysler will sell electric versions of the Ace
Published: 23 January 2008
Chrysler has signed a deal with Indian manufacturer Tata Motors to build an electric version of the Ace mini truck for the US market.
The prototype has passed required safety and reliability tests, and Tata will aim to export up to 10,000 fully-built battery-powered Ace trucks by the end of 2008, with production reaching 50,000.
Ace trucks are normally equipped with diesel four-stroke engines with a handful of horsepowers and top speed below 40mph.
Tata recently revealed its one-Lakh car - the so-called cheapest car in the world at £1,300 ($2,500) - while Chrysler debuted a number of electric vehicles at the Detroit Motor Show.
Tata is also thought to be close to inking a deal with Ford to buy British luxury marques Jaguar and Land Rover.
