In a move that few were expecting - and on the eve of its likely sale from Ford to Tata Motors - Jaguar has announced the possible return of the classic E-Type sports car.
The comeback has been announced with a view to competing directly with European supercars and will take Jaguar toe-to-toe with the likes of Porsche, Audi and Aston Martin in the two-seater sports car stakes.
The E-Type was originally a classic icon of swinging sixties Britain but could make a comeback as early as 2011 as part of the Big Cat´s stunning new line-up, including the new XF, forthcoming XJ and XKR grand tourer.
The announcement that Jag is looking at a number of new models to replace the X-Type comes just as Ford is on the verge of offloading Jaguar, along with Land Rover, to another buyer thought to be India´s Tata Motors.
The E-Type may replace the struggling X-Type saloon and slot into Jag´s new line-up as a purer sports car than the XKR. Jaguar designer Ian Callum - responsible for the much-lauded XF - reportedly designed a car based on the F- Type concept shown by Jaguar in 2000, which was not pursued.
That design could form the basis of the new E-Type, with styling cues from Jag´s new design philosophy as seen on the XF. The new Jag would compete with the Porsche 911, Aston Vantage and Audi R8, while Ferrari and Lamborghini may also cast a few furtive glances across the channel.
Jaguar is currently focussed on the new XJ - reportedly as bold a design as the XF - which is due to launch in 2009.
Another classic car return? Don´t bet against it.
