The BMW X6 - a niche too far?
Published: 14 January 2008
BMW has unveiled its X6 sports-activity-cross-coupe-thing at the Detroit Motor Show ahead of its arrival in the UK from £42K in May.
Powered by a 408bhp V8 and featuring a limited-slip rear diff to improve torque, the X6 is designed to appeal to those SUV drivers who feel that driving a three-tonne behemoth takes the edge off their driving pleasure.
The twin-turbocharged V8 produces 408bhp at 5,500rpm and 442lb-ft of torque from 1,800rpm through to 4,500rpm. Zero to 62mph takes 5.4 seconds, while top speed has been electronically limited to 155mph.
Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 22.6mpg, with EfficientDynamics making that figure semi-respectable. Other turbo petrol and diesel engines will be available at launch.
The four-door four-seater will accommodate four and the rear seats fold down, but it will be interesting to see if the X6 matches the interior practicality of an SUV proper.
Neither use nor ornament, the X6 is actually ugly.

Euro Car Parts has acquired Pinco 1555 Ltd, including all 53 of LSUK's 53 branches, together with subsidiaries M I Diesel Products, Protech Automotive (UK) and Yeovil Rewind.

Euro Car Parts has put out a statement on the closure of LSUK, stating that a closure of the business was unavoidable due to a 'lack of support'.

LSUK, thought to have been rescused by Euro Car Parts, has been unexpectedly closed by the new owners with the loss of over 600 jobs.
