Best and worst cars for depreciation in 2007

The MINI was the slowest-depreciating car in the UK in 2007, according to Parker´s Car Guides´ depreciation report.

The report considers what a car owner could expect to recoup now on a car bought in January 2007, with MINI owners likely to have lost £1388 - £27 a week.

Parker´s says the MINI hangs onto its value so well because of its looks, driveability and servicing deals. BMW´s fuel-saving EfficientDynamcis programmes - introduces in August 2007 to the MINI range - have also added to the MINI´s popularity, in combination with the new model introduced last year.

Dan Pulleyn, Used Car Development Manager, MINI said: " Used car buyers have long recognised the advantages of the MINI TLC servicing packages and the MINI Cherished used car programme offers an extensive range of customer benefits allied to a strong dealer network."

The Honda Jazz is runner-up, despite being replaced in 2008, having appeared in the top five of the annual depreciation report every year since its launch in 2002 due to build quality, good interior space and perky, efficient engines. The result is that it lost an average of just £2017 during last year.

Small cars are more popular than ever and make up the entire top 10, reflecting the continued trend towards smaller and more efficient cars.

The Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 107 trio - the same model rebadged - make up three of the top 10 places with attractive prices, decent kit levels and fuel efficiency appealing to owners mindful of rising fuel duty, car tax and the prospect of congestion charges.

Other cars appearing include budget Asian brands such as the Perodua Kelisa, Proton Satria Neo and Hyundai Amica are boosted by their scarcity on the roads.

Unsurprisingly sports and luxury brands constitue the worst cars for losing value, with the Maybach 57/62 losing £77,651 of value in one year.

At last a correspondent who uses cash as a depreciation figure as against a percentage of list price. My Hyundai getz cost me £5995 five years ago. If I put it in a skip on the day its warranty expires (5 years) I´ve lost £6k in 5 years. How many cars can you say that about?

Very few I´d´ve thought, though I doubt you´d get much change from a Ssangyong.
