Ford extends Easy Fuel to new Focus to prevent misfuelling

Ford has extended its Easy Fuel system that prevents dunces from filling up their car with the wrong type of fuel to more models.

Initially available on the new Mondeo, the 2008 Ford Focus will now carry the system as well.

Ford says that twice as many motorists are filling up on the wrong type of fuel as a decade ago. New, quieter diesel engines that are less recognisable as oil-burners could be partly to blame, as motorists mistake the lack of clatter for a petrol engine.

The wrong fuel in either engine is likely to cause significant damage to a petrol engine and can wreck fuel- injection systems in diesel engines, especially newer models.

The Easy Fuel system consists of a sealed filler pipe insert and fuel nozzle locator that guides the nozzle to the tank opening.

The insert contains a mechanically operated diameter detector which only allows the larger diesel fuel nozzle to be inserted into the filler pipe, and locks out the thinner petrol nozzles.
