Volvo is adding new models and engines to its bioethanol flex-fuel range.
The new V70 estate and new S80 saloon will have the option of 2-litre or 2.5-litre turbocharged FlexiFuel engines later this year and early in 2008 respectively.
The 2-litre model produces 143bhp and 136lb-ft of torque returning 24.4mpg in the V70 and 25mpg in the S80. Volvo says the 2-litre lump will output 197bhp.
A 124bhp 1.8-litre FlexiFuel unit is already available in the C30, S40 and V50 models. Volvo expects to sell 10,000 FF units worldwide this year.
“Flexifuel has considerable potential in larger models too. That is why we plan to continuously expand the implementation of this technology over the coming years,” says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Brand, Business and Product Strategy at Volvo Cars.
“It’s a move that is being driven by the extended availability of biofuels throughout Europe. Biofuel standardisation and guidelines for sustainable production within the EU would make the fuel’s development even smoother.”
The FlexiFuel engines run on renewable E85 bio-ethanol fuel which emits up to 80% less fossil carbon dioxide emissions than petrol, when the carbon offset from the biofuel crops’ growth is factored in to calculations.
The FlexiFuel car can also be powered by petrol or bioethanol in any mixture as an engine management system monitors the blend and automatically modifies the injection and ignition timings to optimise performance.
“No single renewable fuel can replace petrol and diesel by itself. We believe in a multi-energy society where many different fuels and technologies are developed in parallel,’ said Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp.
“E85 is a strong alternative that reduces dependency on fossil fuels, and our Flexifuel programme is an
important part of our strategy to contribute to sustainable personal mobility.”

Euro Car Parts has acquired Pinco 1555 Ltd, including all 53 of LSUK's 53 branches, together with subsidiaries M I Diesel Products, Protech Automotive (UK) and Yeovil Rewind.

Fuel protests similar to those that brought the UK to a halt in 2000 are being planned by a breakaway group of disaffected hauliers, according to press reports.

Euro Car Parts has put out a statement on the closure of LSUK, stating that a closure of the business was unavoidable due to a 'lack of support'.

LSUK, thought to have been rescused by Euro Car Parts, has been unexpectedly closed by the new owners with the loss of over 600 jobs.
