Tata Motors has emerged as a potential buyer for Land Rover and Jaguar, as the deadline for offers for the Ford marques arrives.
The Indian manufacturer refused to comment on the situation, boosting speculation that a bid may be forthcoming.
Several private equity groups are also thought to be interested in the sale, according to the Financial Times, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
Union leaders have been particularly fearful of the prospect of Jaguar and Land Rover being sold to private equity groups.
Ford will meet with interested parties over the net two months before deciding on two final bidders.
Ford sold Aston Martin earlier this year for nearly £500m, and will hope to recoup close to double that for the two luxury marques.
