Richard Hammond, Top Gear presenter and MotorTorque favourite has been airlifted to Leed´s General Infirmary where he is said to be in a critical condition following a crash. The accident happened during filming of the BBC2 proramme where the presenter was attempting to set a new land speed record for Britain in a jet-powered Vampire car reaching speeds of up to 280mph.
The confirmed that the presenter had been injured during a Top Gear shoot, and Inspector Mike Thompson of North Yorkshire Police reported that a report was made to the fire service at around 5.45pm Wednesday evening regarding a male trapped in an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield. The occupant was then airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
Richard Hammond lives in Cheltenham with his wife Amanda and their two daughters. As well as Top Gear he also earned himself the nickname of ´Mr Prime Time´ getting his own 5pm ITV show and has presented shows such as PetrolHeads and Braniac. He was due to appear at MPH ´06 when the show comes to Birmingham´s NEC 26-29 October and London´s Earls Court from 2-5 November.

Richard Hammond remains seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car.
The accident happened during filming for the new series of Top Gear at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.
Richard was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary´s neurological unit. A hospital spokesman said this morning: ´He has seen some improvement overnight, but remains in a serious but stable condition´.
Richard´s wife Mindy and their daughters Willow and Isabella are at his bedside. We´ll update you on his condition as we find out more, but for now our thoughts are with his family.
We´ve spoken to Jeremy this morning - he´s on his way to Leeds to see Richard and Mindy and will be giving us an update shortly.
Obviously the crash will be fully investigated by the Health and Safety Executive and the BBC.
The BBC said in a statement: ´We are looking into all the factors of this accident and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage until we know the full situation´.
