TVR, the British sports car maker has finalised the lastest stage of its relocation plans and has confirmed that the company will be remaining in Britain and predominantely in Lancashire.
Fears were raised when the company made over 70 workers redundant in April and had said that it planned to close its factory in Blackpool to open a bigger and better production site elsewhere. It was feared that the company was planning to move TVR production overseas with job losses a certainty for the remaining 260 staff.
However, although TVR have announced that they will be closing the Bispham factory, they have revealed plans to operate from a brand new international headquarters in Lancaster, where management sales and marketing teams as well as reseach and development will all be based. There will also be a TVR museum and a library at the new HQ.
It was also announced that after discussions held with the local council, final production of the TVR will remain in Lancashire, in the Squires Gate area of Blackpool. Some sub-assembly manufacturing may be conducted away from the new plant, but this is as yet undecided and is set to be the subject of future discussion.
The news has been welcomed by Union leaders and comes as a welcome shot in the arm to the UK car manufacturing industry which has suffered significantly bad times recently, including the impending closure of the Peugeot-Citroen plant at Ryton in the Midlands, and the loss of jobs at the Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port.
