Valve

Valves refer to the number of inlets and outlets per cylinder in a car engine. Cylinders in modern engines are likely to have two or four valves each, generally using double overhead camshafts (DOHC) to take in fuel and air and to provide an outlet for exhaust gases.
SEE ALSO: Variable Valve Timing

Variable Valve Timing (VVT)

Valves which control the air/fuel mix into the cylinders and the exhaust gases out. Computers control the timing of the valves, depending on the demands on the engine at that particular time.

VED (Vehicle Excise Duty)

Vehicle Excise Duty, otherwise known as road tax, is an annual charge on keeping a vehicle on the road. VED is now graduated according to carbon dioxide emissions from bands A-G, with Band A (under 100g/km) exempt from paying road tax and Band G (225g/km +) paying £300 per year. The top rate will rise to £400 per year from April 2008. As a result alternative fuel vehicles often attract a lower VED, while more polluting vehicles such as SUVs, luxury and sports cars attract a higher road tax.

Vehicle to Vehicle Communication

Affording a vehicle a virtual sixth sense to pre-empt drivers as to potential road issues, both General Motors and Volvo have developed cars that can effectively communicate with one another. Using GPS vehicles can detect the presence and any subsequent movement of other vehicles within a quarter mile radius, hiding in a blind spot, for example. Drivers can then make more informed decisions -anticipating and reacting - based on audio and visual warnings from the car.

VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number)
