Octane

A fuel's octane rating is a measure of the compression resistance of petrol and other fuels ignited by a spark in an engine. A higher octane denotes a higher-quality fuel, less likely to detonate early. UK petrol pumps usually dispense fuel with an octane number of 95 or 98.

Oil-burner

Colloquial term for a diesel engine.

Optimum Shift Indicator

A device located on instrumentation display surfaces suggesting the optimum gear selection for driving economically, dependent on individual driving situation.

Oversteer

Oversteer occurs when rear wheels lose traction, sliding out in the opposite direction to the turn and potentially sending the car into a spin. Likely to propel you into someone's front garden, especially in rear-wheel drive cars.
