Ladder-frame chassis

Rough and ready system of making heavy-duty vehicles such as 4x4s, consisting of a separate cabin built on independent suspension, as opposed to a monocoque chassis.

Lane assistance

System that monitors where your car is in relation to road positions and delivers an electric shock to the driver to warn him or her of the fact. Only joking, it's a buzzer.

Lb/ft

Pound foot. A measurement of torque used in the UK.

Lease

An extended car hire system, with multiple variations. You can choose to lease a car over a certain period of time before returning it, or paying a balloon payment at the end of the term and buying the car outright.

LED (light emitting diode)

LED lights are more powerful and quick to warm than traditional lamps. Brake lights can also respond to the amount of brake pressure applied. Still quite expensive, due to the large amount of required LEDs.

Lift-off oversteer

When a car's rear slides outwards as a result of the loss of traction resulting from lifting one's foot off the accelerator. Likely to result in an unfortunate incident.

Lightweight Engineering

Terminology describes the application of advanced lightweight materials in automotive construction. The introduction of lightweight aluminium, magnesium alloy and thermoplastics ultimately reduces a vehicle's overall weight, subsequently enhancing driving dynamics and the sustaining of improved fuel economy.

Locking wheelnuts

Used to prevent the theft of wheels from a vehicle. Useful if you own a high-performance car with expensive wheels.

Low Friction Fluids

Low-friction transmission fluids work in tandem with low friction engine oil and and drive fluid to minimise energy lost during friction between components in a car engine.

LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas)

Alternative fuel that was briefly hailed as an alternative fuel to petrol or diesel. Its eco benefits are now somewhat disputed and fuel network diminished, though LPG does burn longer and cleaner than regular fossil fuels. LPG vehicles are currently exempt from the London Congestion Charge and incur a reduced road tax rating. Also known as autogas.

LX

A model specification used by some manufacturers - most notably by Ford. Trim levels indicate the level of equipment, luxury and gadgets on a certain model. In the case of Ford it's often the entry-level trim.
