Toyota and Land Rover are both cutting production at their UK plants to avoid stockpiling vehicles in difficult economic conditions.
Land Rover says the cuts will lead to Friday shifts and some nightshifts being halted not lead to job losses, but it will institute a four-day week at the Solihull plant leading to a drop in the number of Discovery and Range Rover Sport models produced.
However, Defender production will be upped, and Fridays will be turned into training days for staff due to work on that day. Land ROver says the staff will be paid in full.
300 Land Rover workers have already moved to the nearby Jaguar Castle Bromwich site to work on the new Jaguar XF.
Meanwhile, Toyota has announced that its cuts to production in Burnaston will not lead to job losses, although !5,000 less Auris models will be produced over thee next five months.
Shifts on the Auris production line will be reduced from two to one, although the two Avensis production lines will remain. Toyota has struggled to shift the new Auris hatchback in large numbers, thanks to lukewarm reviews and the impact of ongoing economic conditions on car buying.
Both manufacturers have struggled to sell cars in the UK over the last six months, with high-end purchases particularly down.
