Ford has posted a profit of £100m in the first quarter of 2008, but may still sell struggling Volvo and axe the Mercury brand as its domestic market share in the US continues to shrink.
Rising fuel prices and the impact of the economic downturn means that Ford is still considering ways of reducing expenditure, and alongside laying off workers, idling plants and axing models, CEO Alan Mulally is said to be considering dispensing with the Volvo and Mercury brands.
The move would leave Ford with just tow brands - Ford and Lincoln - along with a majority stake in Japanese Mazda.
In the face of recent losses that totalled over $12bn in 2006, Ford has dismantled its Premier Auto Group since Mulally's arrival - selling Aston Martin in 2007 and currently finalising a deal to offload Jaguar and Land Rover to Indian Tata Motors for a mere £1bn.
Ford's fist quarter profit contrasts with a net loss of $282m in the first quarter last year. Revenues for the period rose to $43.5bn – an increase of $500m on the same period last year.
Ford of Europe posted a pre-tax profit of $739 million excluding revenues or losses from Jaguar or Land Rover.
