Folly Friday: Parallel parking equation, caravan cake, problematic Panamera

In Folly Friday this week, a caravan made of cake, Allegro beats Lexus LFA, scientists waste everyone’s time and Porsche protests too much.

Useless mathematical equation solves nothing

Are you one of those people that struggles with parallel parking? Embarrassed by your repeated attempts to reverse a Yaris into a parking space in front of a group of jeering builders? Petrified of nudging your neighbour’s Focus while he peers out of the window? Shown up by your kerbed alloys?

Fear not, for scientists have a solution for you. Simply apply this mathematical formula when parallel parking.

What could be easier? Just make sure you take a pen, ruler, compass, theodolite and calculator with you everywhere you park. And make sure you have a good few hours to map out your route in chalk before proceeding.

Otherwise you might be, you know, wasting your time or something.

DIY car maintenance: “like frying an egg” says Haynes

Title of press release received this week.

Is it? Is it really?

Doesn’t look much like frying an egg to MT.

Winner of caravan cake-making competition

Practical Caravan in association with Lakeland are pleased to announce the winners of their inaugural caravan cake making competition.

The competition was launched in the September issue with a feature on how to make the perfect caravan cake.

Nothing snide to say about this – we like it.

Panamera dramarama

This video was subtitled ‘Porsche once again tries to say the Panamera is part of its history’ on auto blog RPMGo, and it’s hard not to draw a similar conclusion as to why Porsche has released this video.

The Panamera four-door has met with the same criticism as the generally unloved Cayenne SUV, the charge being that the saloon moves too far away from the original Stuttgart ethos to be a true Porsche.

Whether it is or not is clearly a matter of opinion, but all this video shows from MT’s point of view is how different the Panamera looks to all of the other models than preceded it.

If we had the cash to buy any Porsche, the Panamera would be pretty much bottom of the list.

Toyota 2000GT up for sale

From the ridiculous to the sublime, this E-Type lookalike from Toyota is one of a strictly limited run.

How many can remain of the original 351 is anyone’s guess, but there’s presumably a limited enough supply to ensure that this fully-restored 2000GT goes for a bundle at a Japanese dealership.

Lexus LFA versus Austin Allegro

Lexus has sent over some stuff on its new LFA supercar, including the video below of its ever-changing engine note.

You can head over to the LFA website to access a sound bank with more noises from the supercar.

All of which is well and good. But does it compare to the evocative roar of a 1.4-litre turbo engine from this British classic? We think not.
