Folly Friday: Taxi for endorsing celebs

Unlikely taxis, pitched battles at Ssangyong and horrifying car celeb endorsements.

Big yellow taxis

There’s a reason the Nissan Primera and Toyota Avensis are perennial favourites of taxi drivers. They’re specious, comfortable, frugal and last for ever.

A Lamborghini Murcielago is not spacious, comfortable or frugal – and certain Lambo models do have an unfortunate tendency to burst into flames.

So, it’s almost certain you’ll never see a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche or monster truck as a taxi?

Or is it?

Exit the double dragon

There may be question marks over the future of certain plants in the UK, and beyond that Europe and the States. But the global recession has hit all over the world, including Korea.

While Hyundai-Kia goes from strength-to-strength, Ssangyong has faltered and now is restructuring under government backing.

Of course, where there is restructuring there are job losses and Ssangyong’s attempts to cut employment have resulted in a two-moth long strike that has ended in a violent confrontation between employees and police that ended with molotov cocktails between thrown and bolts being fired from modified catapults.

Inevitably all of this has left a question mark over Ssangyong’s future, with major shareholder SAIC facing a write down in its stake and the company managing to shift a paltry 70-odd vehicles in July.
