Car insurance is a necessary evil for most of us. Since legislation came into force back in 1930 requiring every person driving a vehicle on any road in the UK to have an insurance policy, it´s been unavoidable. You cannot tax or drive your car in Britain without an insurance certificate, and it is a criminal offence to do so without one.
But that doesn´t stop some people.
Earlier on in the year, Merseyside Police launched a campaign to stamp out anti-social behaviour on the region´s roads, and top of their hit list was uninsured drivers. We told you how they paraded a seized Porsche 911 and BMW outside their Canning Place HQ, then how they displayed the cars that they had crushed along with a sparkling X-Type Jag, after the owners failed to stump up the cash to retrieve their vehicles. The campaign is still going strong and there is a parade of shame along the waterfront, acting as a warning to anyone who thinks that the police are not interested.
For those of us who do stump up the cash to insure our cars, it can add a fair amount to our monthly outgoings. As we reported in this story, it was recently discovered by Privilege Insurance that safe drivers, (identified as those having 4 or more years no claims bonus on their policies) saved an average of £10,000 on their insurance policies over a lifetime. £10,000! This meant that British driver´s with full ´no claims´ would pay on average £307 for their insurance premium, while those with a fault claim would have to fork out around £510 - a yearly difference of £203.
Ian Parker, Managing Director of Privilege Insurance had this to say on the subject: "The research shows that safe drivers are saving thousands of pounds by staying accident free, as well as making the roads a safer place for us all. The lifetime saving that safe drivers can make is further incentive for all drivers to take care when behind the wheel. While insurance is sometimes seen as a boring necessity, driving safely and obeying the rules of the road are important."
So if you want to drive a car in the UK, there’s really no way round it. You are going to have to pay up for car insurance. But there are ways to save. As demonstrated above, if you drive carefully and safely, in time, you will see your premiums drop. If you’re a new driver, you should be putting your ideas of driving a Honda Civic Type R or a Volkswagen Golf GTI on the back burner for a little while and aim for something that’s not going to break the bank.
Take a look at our feature on Great Cars for New Drivers if you need some ideas. Don’t worry, they’re not all tiny little cars that go about as fast as an asthmatic ant, there is something for everyone – VW Fox and Polo, Renault Clio, Fiat Grande Punto, Ford Ka, Vauxhall Corsa and the Mazda 3 are all covered. It also includes the excellent scheme offered by Young Marmalade, designed specifically to help younger drivers get on the road.
When it comes to new cars, I don’t know about you but I’d rather be spending my money on extras for a funky version of one of these cars, and enjoying low premiums rather than buying a basic model of a more ‘desirable’ car and having to fork out just as much on the insurance.
