Details of the all new Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S were revealed yesterday, unveiling a completely new body design, striking modern interior and high-performance engines for the two new models which will be on sale by the turn of the year.
The overwhelming success of its predecessor, launched 5 years ago in 2001 has paved the way for the new Mini to consolidate and expand its position in the premium segment that it created. The re-launched Mini has proved to be a huge success and has sold over 800,000 cars around the world, a quarter of them snapped up in the UK.
The outside appearance of the new Mini has remained true to it´s predecessor, yet every body panel differs. The Mini design team chose to evolve the previous model rather than redesign it completely, and because of this the Mini style shines through. It stands out as much now as it did 5 years ago, and explains why demand for the new Mini is growing rather than waning.
The changes continue under the bonnet, but these are more radical. There is a new 4-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engine featuring a wealth of technical features and new suspension designed to deliver a more comfortable ride experience, while not losing the traditional Mini ´go-kart´ experience that fans enjoy so much.
The new Mini has more usable space for both front and back passengers and owners will be able to choose from a wider range of colours, interior specifications and options to allow them to make their car suit their personality.
Producing 120bhp the new Mini accelerates from 0-62mph in 9.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 126mph. The Mini Cooper S is powered by an intercooled and turbocharged version of the same power unit and can produce 175bhp. It covers the 0-62mph sprint in 7.1 seconds and achieves a top speed of 140mph.
The fuel consumption has improved dramatically. The combined cycle for the Mini Cooper is now 48.7mpg and Mini Cooper S is 40.9mpg. Co2 emissions have been reduced which means that the models will shift 2 places in the VED car tax ratings.
The all-new Mini one will follow in early 2007 with a 1.4 litre engine and maximum output of 95bhp. The Mini range will be joined by the new Mini Diesel featuring the most advanced and sophisticated turbodiesel technology in its class.
